I draw to explore; ideas, diagrams and theories are my fruits and the drawings are my salad. Last year I graduated with a BA in Fine Art and have since been trying to do whatever I can to do what I love - to learn and to share all the tiny things that I find profound. A lot of my inspiration comes from nature, the system of the world, and idle bits and pieces that I find interesting like dioramas and astronomy. My design for Frinton Press is a perfect example. Give me a fineliner and a geography book and I'll be happy for hours....

I'm an Illustrator and Designer working across a range of disciplines, varying on the project and desired outcome.
The piece I submitted is a representation of a natural occurring form using ephemeral materials combined with synthetic constituents to produce an unpredictable outcome.

Andrew Walker:

I am a London based illustrator and designer originally from West Yorkshire. My career in art and design began with a BA in 3D design at Manchester Met University, where I specialized in innovative furniture based on simple construction and manufacture.

Through design, drawing has become the backbone of my thinking and making. This has led me to focus my interests in Graphic Illustration.

My work now explores the everyday and mundane realities with wit and satire using imagery that others can relate to. My ideas come from my own experiences such as conversation, people perception, collected imagery and current events.

I use a range of materials and techniques from pencil, watercolour, acrylic paint, spray paint and silk screen-printing.

I am currently working as a freelance illustrator and co-founder/designer for a bespoke hand-printed t-shirt label Homework Collective.

Brianne Farley is a Midwestern Yankee who is hiding away in Savannah, Georgia, finishing her MFA at the Savannah College of Art and Design and working as a freelance illustrator and children's book designer. You can see her work and send her a hello at briannefarley.com.

I made these Fishbirds after a particularly strange dream in which my sister and I were having a fight while snorkeling, and all around us were these birds that lived underwater. They remind me of that saying, "A fish and a bird may fall in love, but where will they build their home?" Well these little Fishbirds build it wherever the hell they like.

My name is Josephine Kibuka originally from Dagenham, and a recent graphic arts graduate from Bucks New Uni. My specialisms lie in illustration and ideas. Its hard to define my illustration style as I simply pick up my pen and draw and see what comes out. Many however have described my style as an intense doodle, as my pieces are often an amulganation of abstract shapes lines and sometimes my main inspiration for them come from patterns and shapes, which I see in almost everything. The piece I submitted came out of wanting to try something new, so instead of going straight to pen and paper, I opted for the photoshop line tool to create a geometric style pattern.

Patrick Savile:

Patrick Savile is an interplanetary bounty hunter, constantly cruising the galaxy for the next big payload.

!!! Me+You winners announced !!!

Eventually the time has come to tell you the result of the Me+You Call for Submissions !

It's all very exciting but first, lets just recap a sec; so Me+You is a project where two artist collaborate on one sheet of wrapping paper, one with a 10x10cm repeating pattern, the other with a 20x20cm repeating pattern. One is printed in white, the other in black in water based screen print on sheets of brown recycled (keep it nice and eco friendly) kraft paper. Neither of the artists have met before or know what the other person's design is but, miraculously, they look absolutely stunning together.

We received an impressive amount of brilliant submissions. Being a submission based project we didn't really know what to expect but six particular artists really shone out and had all gone for the same, conceptual, quite 70s-style design. We're massively pleased with the results. Well done to the winners and everyone who took the time to submit!

We also want to remind you that this project was very kindly funded by IdeasTap and their Ideas Fund scheme.

IdeasTap is a charity that funds, connects and nurtures new creative talent. It was launched in December 2008 as the arts platform of The Peter De Haan Charitable Trust.

The IdeasTap website currently has a membership of over 40,000 young creative people and provides a platform for them to connect, showcase their work and skills, find jobs and promote events and exhibitions of their work.

In the past year IdeasTap has supported young artists with around £200,000 of cash funding. Primarily, this money is distributed through the Ideas Fund - an annual £150,000 funding programme from IdeasTap. The Ideas Fund is a financial and mentoring award that recognises and celebrates young creative talent, and anyone between the ages of 16‐25 can apply. Since 2008 IdeasTap has provided over 3,500 young people with direct funding, expert mentoring or the opportunity to work with a leading arts organisation.

Through its partnership programme, IdeasTap works to deliver these life-changing opportunities with: Magnum Photos, Old Vic New Voices, National Youth Theatre of Great Britain and National Student Drama Festival.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS part 2.

For the second part of this two part project, you are invited to send in a 20x20cm tile to be made into a repeated pattern on wrapping paper.

Each sheet will be a collaboration between two artists, one in black and the other in white on brown kraft paper. The first pattern will repeat more densely as it will be 10x10cm. The second, which we are now asking for, will repeat less densely at 20x20cm. Over- printed, it’s bound to be a stunner.

We won’t judge you based on your experience, qualifications, location or age, as long as it’s in by midnight on May 1st (that’s a Sunday night in 3 weeks time) and so long as it fits the rules outlined below, it should be fine.

You can send in a design even if you have submitted to the first part of this two part project and you can send in as many designs as you wish. You must be prepared to see your designs combined with another artist’s design.

The chosen designs will be judged on their ability to tessellate, stick to the rules outlined below and be a tip top rad design. As a tip we’re not too hyped on swirls and hearts. Go to our website and have a scoot through our blog to see previously chosen artworks.

Before printing we did all these test prints to experiment with colours and check quality and stuff. To save paper and space we often ended up printing two artworks on top of each other. They turned out so great that we thought we'd make a whole project overlapping two artist's designs, hence the new WP11 project. FRINTON PRESS IS CALLING FOR SUBMISSIONS

Anyone and everyone is invited to send in entries for a 10 x 10cm repeating tile to be used for...you guessed it.... our 2011 wrapping paper.

This time though we're going one step further. Each sheet will be a collaboration between two artists, one in black and the other in white on brown kraft paper.

i-D Online reviewed us a while back. Only just found it. Google alerts is rubbish. Sure was a busy night though and the Kopperberg went down very popularly. The artworks are now down but the wallpaper can still be viewed in the basement of Jaguar Shoes. As one lovely blogger said,

Lost and Found

Just before Christmas I was leaving home stressing that I had to get/make a dozen more Christmas presents in two days when I spotted a bin filled with beautiful hand printed papers. I stashed the lot, or those that didn't have bin juice on them, and brought them home to cut up and make into smart moleskin style notepads. Everyone loved them! If you'd like one too just ask. Here are some photos of the papers. I have no pictures of the notepads as they are all in my cousins pockets.

Sunday was a fun day of screen printing in Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes.

Turned a trendy Shoreditch bar into a playschool of adults tapping into pre-christmas creativity and cutting and sticking like kids! Fun times!

University of Brighton (graduated in summer 2009)

Give us some Brighton recommendations?

Castor and Pollux, art bookshop on the seafront is great for getting some inspiration. Sunday market at the Marina is a good place to find some old arty magazines etc, which are very inspiring too.

Would you encourage people to move there? Do you think it is better for recent graduates to live in a smaller city or a larger city?

No I don't necessarily recommend people to move to Brighton. I think the most important thing is that you're happy wherever you live, isn't it? I happen to have been to university here and I like the convenience of being able to pop by my friends' places anytime and get around by foot or bike in Brighton. I sometimes do go to meetings in London but it only takes an hour to get there. Considering most people who live in London have to commute all the time, the only difference is either you're on the tube, or on the train I think. Also as a freelancer, I normally work in my studio except for meetings etc (which is a corner of my living room but I call it "my studio" to make me sound like a proper artist haha) so I don't feel necessity of living in London. I love visiting London a lot but I like the chill-out feel of Brighton too much. And it's got a beach too!

How would you describe your work?

Meticulous on a ridiculous level

What are your tools/ what medium do you work in?

Mostly pencils

Thinking back to your time at university do you think you were able to develop your style through the projects you were set or do you think that only once university is over can you really concentrate on honing your illustration style?

I'm not trying to be a sales person for my university, but really, my university was really, really good. The tutors were always encouraging and helpful in making my work stronger and even though I never considered of establishing my own style (I believe "style" is something that leaks out from your work non-stoppably), I learnt what the strongest line of work I can create is.

Do you feel you have reached the place you want to be as an illustrator?

No. I like the fact that I kind of can live on what I earn as an illustrator (with the help of a bit of savings from the past too I must add) but I really want "being an illustrator" to be my prime and proper occupation. At the moment, I feel I'm somewhere on the way.

Also I think I would never "develop my work" enough to reach the point of saying, "yeah THIS IS THE VERY BEST OF WHAT I CAN DO." My work is always on development and yes sometimes I do feel like I created something really brilliant but quite often, a couple of days after completing the piece and I'd think, "It's still ok and I like what I created, but to be fair it's not as good as I thought". So to my eyes there's always a space for improvement for my work and as long as it's that way, I probably wouldn't feel that I've reached the place I want to be as an illustrator. But then again it might be a good thing because if I reached the highest point, then I wouldn't know what the motivation for work would be. There's no need to worry about that though because I'm pretty sure I wouldn't reach the point forever haha.

What do you think about the competition we ran and why did you submit?

Good competition with very open brief. I submitted because I really want to go into surface design/card design etc.

What are you working on at the moment?

Personal pencil drawing, also designing some cards too.

Ben: What you think makes Frinton Press so cool right now?

Soju: I was working with Frinton Press for a month. They make lots of ideas which are new, and the ideas are always developing and improved as discussing in the team. They are always trying to do things nobody ever did before. That can be seen from the success of their first wrapping paper project last year. I’m looking forward to their second wrapping paper project they are working at the moment.

Screen Printing

Just incase you didn't already know we screen-print everything at Frinton Press.

Yep, that's right, it a laborious method involving specially created silk screens, hands, back ache and time. We do not mass manufactured anything and each item is a limited edition, which guarantees that the product is a quality artwork as well as being a functional product, like wrapping paper, that you can use.

Silk screen printing was first adopted by graphic artists in the 1930’s and popularised by Pop artists such as Andy Warhol in the 1960’s. A screen is used to print onto a porous surface, in our case mostly paper. Each colour must be individually drawn and requires a separate screen to be made.

It a long and arduous process but the results are nicer than any other type of printing (in our opinion) and that's why we think you'll like our products even more once you see them in the real.

I’ve just moved from London to Zurich, Switzerland

Where/ What did you study, if you studied?

I studied Interaction Design at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), in Zurich, Switzerland

What do you do day to day?

I work as a freelance motion designer, illustrator and art director in London, Munich and Switzerland and try to keep a good balance between jobs and private projects.

How would you describe your work?

Well, my private work is a bit different from the commissioned work, which usually depends on the brief. In my private projects I explore more, do a lot of mixed media things, play with colours, shapes, different material and media. But in the end both types of work are well structured, thoroughly planed and detailed - so they do reflect me and my way of thinking. My work is about life, things, objects and situations. It's a world of imagination but built of what really exist. I like to use diamonds, rainbows, trees, little buildings, shoes and much more stuff. And I love the idea that things could hang from the sky :).

Do you pretty much live in a world a bit like Gabriel Garcia Bernez in The Science of Sleep then?

Wow. I would love to, though. I like the magic of any kind of parallel world that is part of everyday life and I probably look at some things in a different way than other people. There's always a huge string of association going on when I look around me. But I am quite down to earth and usually not lost in daydreams at all!

Where do you get your inspiration from?

From basically everywhere: a simple candy-wrapping to the saatchi gallery - everything can be equally inspiring! I do a lot of research, collect stuff from candy wrapping to parts I cut out of magazines, read books, newspapers and magazines and I like to sit in public transport and see what happens around me.

What are your tools/ what medium do you work in?

I love working with paper, cutter, glue and pencils as much as composing artworks and animations on my computer.

Will you always stick to motion design? What other mediums would you like to work in?

Yes, I do love motion design. And I usually imagine things in motion, as time gives you one more dimension. But I definitely don't want to determine myself to one medium only. Sometimes it's quite interesting to show one moment only and leave it to itself. I really love to set up little scenes, and will explore this direction more in future. I'm quite tempted to use threads and fabric as well at some point.

What do you think about the competition we ran and why did you submit?

As a big pattern-fan myself, I loved the wrapping paper idea from beginning. I already wanted to submit a pattern last year, but was too busy then, but this year it worked out. As a motion designer you hardly see your designs in print, therefore this is a really great thing for me.

What are you working on at the moment?

I'm juggling several projects at the moment. I help the guys at Proud Creative in Shoreditch to pitch for the redesign of a youth channel and I work on a double page for Faesthetic Magazine.

On what or with who would you most like to work?

Well, I kind of take things as they come in and never really plan in which direction it goes. But yes, I would really love to work on movie titles at some point. Or a crazy shop window would be challenging. And then I still keep interactive storytelling in the back of my mind (a theme I worked on for at uni years ago). And sometimes I feel like "who needs design at all, I would better help to save the world ... "

What and where did you study?
I studied graphic design at the Cambridge school of art where I graduated from in 2009.

What do you do day to day?

Apart from being a part time worker and freelance designer, I look for inspiration from all angles for new ideas and potential projects.

How would you describe your work

I could say it’s a mixture of the simple and the complex, although I try to think of the best solution for a brief rather than the style.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I tend to get influence from the shape and structure of everyday objects/buildings and places, shaving away the detail. More big influences of mine are texture, pattern and the majesty of space.

What are your tools/ what medium do you work in?

Illustrator and photoshop, but i do love taking things back to basics with a pen, paper and scanner.

When you work do you know first exactly what you want to do or do your ideas develop as you work?

I think my ideas have always developed from start to finish, going from brainstorming to general ideas then conclusion. Even when I create an illustrative piece where i know how I envision it when finished, it is never quite the same, which can be a good or bad thing (mostly good).

Do you think it is important for a graphic designer to brand him/herself with a distinct style or is it possible to be versatile and still marketable?

Parts of the industry does seem to work through trends, people will always adhere to these trends. Although some designers have a visually distinct style it seems like its deeper than the finished product, meaning work methods, mediums and inspirations. Its more about the answer to the brief than a visible style.

What do you think about the competition we ran and why did you submit?

As mentioned earlier pattern is a big influence of mine and after seeing the competition on the YCN website I jumped at the opportunity of entering. I also liked working with a restriction in size also for this particular project.

What are you working on at the moment?

Recently I've been involved in creating pattern work for a clothing wholesalers. Also I have been looking into types of branding, especially Japanese stab stitch binding. So coming up soon I will be uploading photos of a book project involving this.

I was once told I am like a old head on a young persons body. I like to make work as they did back in the day.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Every thing and anything but mostly from mythology and fairy tales. I am also very inspired by mid-century modern graphic design particularly the work of Polish poster artist Jan Lenica.

What are your tools/ what medium do you work in?

I use a mixture of lino prints screen-printing and collage.

I think it is a fantastic opportunity for artists to see work screen-printed in a collection with others.

Do you think it possible in the present climate for illustrators, particularly newly graduated illustrators to survive solely on illustration as a means of income?

I don't know the answer to this yet. If you ask me in 1 years time I'll be able to give you a fully equipped answer. I've just graduated and I'm still trying to find my illustration feet. However, with a positive approach and dedication, I think it is definitely possible.

What do you think about the competition we ran and why did you submit?

I like it when repeat patterns are used for decoration and something a human might need (like wrapping paper).

What do you feel about projects like this one, which bring artists from all backgrounds and stages together on a project?

It's really encouraging for us new graduates to be 'accepted' and reassures us that we’re investing into the right thing/career when groups like yourselves make something of the work.

Do you think there is elitism in the illustration world?

I don't think so. I've never encountered it anyway. I think you'll go far if you don't copy other illustrators and keep working hard.

What are you working on at the moment?

I have just finished a drawing for The Nest, a new club, opening in October, which promotes music and art.

Who or what would you most like to work on/with?

I've never really thought about this. As I still feel like a seedling. But if I had my way, I would like to work with maybe NASA who would tell me how the world will end (or not) and I could draw it for them.

What do you do day to day?

I'm a freelance graphic designer, working across print, web, branding... anything I get the opportunity to do really!

How would you describe your work?

Commercially, I keep most things neat and functional. My screenprints, though, are becoming increasingly abstract and I'm trying to squeeze the most out of my colours with the use of various patterns. Hopefully there will be chances to implement this kind of thing commercially in future

Do you ever find that the necessity to make commercial work and earn through your work hinders your freedom to do anything you want?

Yes! Imagine all that time you spend commercially instead dedicated to experimentation and personal projects. How interesting things would be! On the other hand, I do feel that working to specific briefs for clients has greatly improved my design skills...

Where do you get your inspiration from?

East London, all around... First Thursdays is normally a good bet, though East London is generally vibrant—inspiration is all over the streets and walls, clubs and bars, shops and people. I'm happy just to stroll about. Also Kandinsky and Barney Bubbles!

What are your tools/ what medium do you work in?

Artwork is normally sketched out (badly) by hand and then straightened out on a Mac

What do you think about the competition we ran and why did you submit?

I liked the idea of creating artwork to be screenprinted onto something that has an actual function and will be used

What are you working on at the moment?

Doing a bit of work for Kickers and preparing my contribution to Household's 'Poundshop' event (which, as it happens, also involves screenprinting something practical...)—opening 18th September!

Drawn, screen print, Photoshop and anything else that seems appropriate.

What do you think about Frinton Press's wrapping paper design competition?
Fun competition, challenging to work to such a small scale.

What are you working on at the moment?
Gig posters for The Black Twig Pickers, poster for a brewery, a screen printed book, some zines, my next record, a zine show/ fair and drawing with felt pens.

Being able to rely purely on illustration as a source of income is a really rare treat. Are there any moments though that you get disheartened, or annoyed, by the illustration world? why? and what do you do to pick yourself up?
Obviously it's fantastic to be able to make a career out of being an illustrator, but of course it has it's drawbacks, when work doesn't come in it can be very discouraging, and often I'm not sure how I'm going to pay rent or eat but I always find a way. I always try and keep my own projects on the go and that really helps keep me going, I get a real satisfaction from releasing a record or working with other great illustrators on a zine or something. I think I'll always run my own projects, it's really important to me.

With who, or on what would you most like to work?
Well I've been lucky enough to work with some fantastic people already, particularly through my Menagerie Music and illustration project, I'm always amazed at how receptive people are to this kind of thing. But I guess I'd really love to do a label for a bottle of ale, I do like ale, there's a whole heap of breweries I'd love to work with. Illustration wise I'm hoping to collaborate with Stu Kolakovic at some point, I really think he's doing some amazing stuff.

Conversations

Before going away on holiday Frinton Press asked two illustrators to have a conversation together.

One was Soju Tanaka, our current intern and a recent Camberwell Illustration graduate with a bountiful bag of cute, happy creatures and colourful animals. The other was Ben Phillips, another London based illustrator, known better for his scratchy inks of batman, skeletons and dark characters.

We gave Soju the colour blue and the theme PREY while Ben was orange and PREDATOR.

Soju then emailed Ben with a 'prey' image and Ben replied by drawing over it a 'predator' image. Ben then emailed Soju with a 'predator' image and Soju replied by illustrating a 'prey' image on top of it. And so the conversation went on until 6 artworks had developed.

Below are the results of the conversation we found in our inbox when we returned from the sun. Those guys are two powerhouses picture makers and the result was beyond anything we could have hoped for.

The artworks will be made into large postcards and sold in various shops, art galleries and through Frinton Press shortly. Please get in touch (frintonpress@gmail.com) if you're interested in either buying a pack or selling them in your shop.

We had a wapping great 400 submissions and were really tempted with almost everyone of them, but as all these things go we just had to be ruthless and choose eight of the best designs for the 2010 wrapping paper.

We, Frinton Press are looking for two interns to help screen-print our wrapping paper.

Each intern will work 11am-5pm, two days a week for a month in either July or August based at Print Club in Dalston, London.

The position will not be paid, however, you will get one month free membership at one of London’s biggest screen printing studios, Print Club (usually worth £90) and be able to use any of their six screen beds, two t-shirt carousels, t-shirt dryer, applemacs, storage facilities, washout room and the mother of all exposure units 24 hours a day during your month with us.

You will also be working under the supervision of Patrick Savile (www.partlycivil.com) who has been a screen-printing pro for at least six years and will teach and guide you through the month and help you develop your screen printing skills and techniques.

Applicants must already be able to screen-print. Send a short CV/letter to frintonpress@gmail.com with the subject line Printing Intern before 13th June. Tell us everything you’ve done relevant to the position and, if possible, images of your work and a website address.

We will not be paying travel expenses so please make sure you are able to get to Dalston on your own expense.

We thought we might give you a little tip as we've been having a lot of submissions that are really great but that we may be unable to use.

To make a tile that is tessalated please make sure that the pattern on the right joins up with the pattern on the left and the pattern on the top joins up with the pattern on the bottom without their being a detectable break. Here are some examples:

It's quite hard to do this and very clever if you can manage to do it as well as Jake and Melissa but there are many websites out there to help and guide.

If you send a picture that does not join up, for example like this:

then that's ok but it would have to be exceptionally great as we'd prefer a design that repeats as Mel and Jake's does.

THE NEW 2010 Wrapping Paper Project

Due to the great success of our 2009 Wrapping Paper Project, Frinton Press are once again calling for submissions to the new and improved 2010 Wrapping Paper Project.

It will be launched in the autumn as a pre-Christmas thing but that doesn't mean your designs should necessarily be Christmassy.

Please send your artwork before 30th April. You can send as many designs as you wish until that date.

The chosen designs will be exhibited in a show later in the year, where the artists will also have an opportunity to sell some of their other artworks.

How to get your artwork print ready

Size

10x10cm

Linework

Hand drawn or computer generated lines must be a minimum of .25 point.

Fonts

If there is any type involved, it should be no smaller then 12pt. Please make sure that all fonts used in your design are converted to outline / flattened or embedded into artwork.

Photographic image

If your artwork contains photographic images (and you want your print to look like a photo) you will need to convert it to halftone.

Colour

Please send your image in black and white. No grey, no mid-tones, as they won't print.

Format

You can send your image in one of the following file formats:

Jpeg, Tiff, Pdf, Psd , Ai, Eps

Non vector images need to be min 300dpi

PLEASE NAME YOUR FILE WITH YOUR NAME SEPARATED BY UNDERSCORE. e.g. Jerry_Springer.jpg

If you don't do this, we won't look at it, or might not, depending on the weather.

Who we are, what we do

Frinton Press is a new kind of platform, which brings artistic creators of all disciplines together on new and exciting projects. The projects are based within a screen-printed medium and aim to be functional, usable objects as well as decorative artworks. Examples are wrapping paper, cards, calendars and books. Artists can thereby find new opportunities to have their work recognised, work with others they may not usually have the chance to work with and to access a wider audience.

  Frinton Press was born last November, from the idea of creating wrapping paper that justified the beautiful and carefully selected present within it. Quality, an interesting presentation and a hand-made look and feel are core to each project and we strive to achieve these while doing our utmost to promote each artist and appeal to the customer.  

Artists from all levels, artistic practices and world-wide are accepted. Discrimination between established and emerging artists is not given, rather designs are chosen on the basis of their quality and relevance to the brief.

We are interested to hear new ideas and link with other people wanting to hear more or get involved.
